The notion of leaving social media, I think not only scares certain people but confuses them as well. We all have and use social media and I don't think leaving them is something we ever consider. But after thinking long and hard, I have decided that I will be leaving it. But not for good. At least not yet. Just for a certain amount of time every now and then, to see how it goes. To see how it affects my life. It's something I have planned to do for quite some time now. And I believe it will benefit me in certain ways. I think everyone should consider trying it as well. But the important thing is realizing why, how and when we all should leave social media, and in what aspects.
Undoubtedly, we have become reliant on these apps and updates. It seems normal, it seems harmless and it can be harmless, but it can also be detrimental to the way we view life in reality, outside of this access to the internet. If you are a spiritual person trying to meditate or simply just a person looking for peace of mind, you will definitely not find it under these circumstances. True peace, true change and true growth from within doesn't come fully out of these apps. Until we turn these phones and computers off and isolate ourselves, sit inside our minds or out in nature or with friends, in one on one interactions, emotionally, physically and mentally, it's really hard to change and grow and become a better person. I'm not saying we can't become great people with access to the internet and social media because we can. But there is a sort of glass ceiling we hit when we still obsess over these platforms.
Think about when we tweet something or post a picture on Instagram, or post a question on Snapchat. Do we do it purely just for our own enjoyment? Or do we do it with expectations of likes, of retweets, of interactions on these apps from other people? And when we don't get this, or don't get enough, or don't get what we wanted, we suffer, we retaliate, or we wish we could change the unchangeable. And this alone, this aspect of social media being a reliancy for validating our thoughts, our emotions and our opinions on things, can be a poisonous and detrimental road to personal growth and spiritual progress. If we can see that our expectancy, our obsession, our poisonous interactions with the internet in a lot of ways can throw us off the path, it might lead us towards thinking about leaving social media.
While I think it is necessary to leave social media, it doesn't really mean that we have to leave it forever, or that we have to leave all of it. We can leave parts of it. And we can try leaving it for a fixed amount of time. Say, for a month, or a whole year for example. Leave it for 1 year and see the difference and improvements yourself. This may sound rediculous or even impossible to some, but it is very important for one's personal growth and spiritual progress, and for a person to live a better, meaningful life, both mentally and physically. Try it out. What have you got to lose, right?
