The idea of vlogging resonated with me for quite some time before I finally created my first vlog in April 2018. I was inspired by creators like Casey Neistat and Ryan Taylor. When I entered the YouTube space, I had one goal: to grow my channel to 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours. These are the benchmarks required to qualify for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), which grants creators the opportunity to monetize their channels and potentially earn money.
For me, it’s not about the money, but rather proving to myself that I can do it—having something to strive for. The truth is, reaching this level is far from easy. Without the drive, passion, skills, and patience, it would be impossible. Countless creators have tried and failed. So, achieving this milestone would be an honor; it would mean that I’m truly worthy.
It took me roughly three years of weekly vlogging to qualify for the YouTube Partner Program, unlocking monetization features and earning money from ads. It took another two years to earn my first $100 (RM400) from YouTube, which finally happened in 2023. In 2024, I reached a point of burnout and slowed down on making videos. Now, in 2025, I’m still taking it slow, uploading about one video every couple of months.
So, what’s next? What will become of my YouTube channel? I could continue doing what I’m doing, earning a hundred dollars every two years or so, or I could start treating YouTube as a business to maximize the potential of being a YouTube Partner.
To clarify: making vlogs is my passion, my hobby, and my form of creative expression. These videos tend to get the least amount of views and, therefore, generate the least amount of money, which is fine. But then there are the travel videos, product reviews, unboxings, and other content that tend to attract more views and generate more revenue. These types of videos have the potential to bring in real money. If I choose to treat YouTube as a business, I need to focus more on creating these non-vlog videos. Since I’ve already been making fewer vlogs, I feel this is the perfect time to shift my focus and experiment with more of these videos to increase my revenue.
While vlogs remain my deepest passion and I will continue making them, there’s no harm in trying to build a business around the same medium now that I have the chance. I need to focus on personal branding and, most importantly, content ideas. I won’t be narrowing down to any single niche just yet, but I plan to experiment with as many ideas as I can to see what works and what doesn’t.
I’ll give it my best shot. It would be a waste not to. Who knows? If I do it right, I might even be able to turn this into a full-time career. Now, wouldn't that be a dream job?
